A diligent background with a reputable background screening company would have uncovered a prior criminal record.  All too often employers hire an applicant believing they have made a good choice. Even when they conduct a background check… or so they thought!

It is extremely important for employers to conduct their own due diligence and research when hiring a background screening company. It shouldn’t always be about pricing, rather, how well the background screening company performs. Do they have safeguards in place to ensure that they have all the correct information on the applicant? Does the background screening company have all necessary protocols in place that all records are fully verified, so the employer receives correct information?

As you will read in the attached news article, a bookkeeper was hired who over time embezzled tens of thousands of dollars from her employer. The employer even had a background check conducted before she was hired.

The problem? She provided a false name on her application which resulted in a worthless background report.

A diligent and professional background screening company would have immediately “red flagged’ the false information the applicant provided. Truth never lies! In this circumstance, the background report should have identified an issue with the applicant’s information.  This would require further inquiry on the part of the employer with the guidance of the background screening company. Clearly this did not happen in this instance.

Background checks have become increasingly more important to employers than in times past. There are a variety of reasons why.  The most prevalent reason for employers to conduct backgrounds on applicants is to ensure a safe working environment for employees, as well as the customer. A survey conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) revealed that 86% of employers believed security is their number one concern. Second is improving the quality of the new hire.

A thorough background check allows an employer to know who they are hiring. Making a hiring decision based on one’s resume or interview doesn’t always tell the full story about one’s past. A background report that may have some adverse information does not necessarily disqualify someone from a job. Rather it advises an employer so that a fully informed decision can be made. Bad hiring decisions invariably lead to litigation or the loss of valued customers.
